Interested in joining Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter of New Mexico? Please review the eligibility requirements below.

  • GPA
    • Seniors (students with 100 or more hours) must have high GPA. These can include transfer hours.
    • Juniors (students with 75 to 99 hours) must have at least a 4.0 GPA. These can include transfer hours.
    • Note: Just because a student has the minimum GPA does not mean they must be invited. We should be quite choosy.
  • UNM Transcript Record
    • Number of hours earned at UNM must be at least 40. There are some transcripts in here that won’t meet this requirement. Those get a score of 0.
    • Note: You may have to look in more than one section to find the total number of hours earned at UNM. Transfer hours are listed separately at the end of the audit.
  • Language Group
    • National PBK rules state that students must complete “the intermediate college level in a foreign language, or its equivalent.” Proficiency tests count. This section gets a checkmark if the student has completed two 200-level course or higher. Give the student a Q rating if you’re not sure their language classes meet the standard – there seem to be some odd ones included (topics classes conducted in English don’t count).
  • Math Group
    • National PBK rules state students must have “the equivalent of two years of college preparatory secondary school mathematics.” Proficiency tests count.
    • For us, 6 hours are required – can include Math and Stat courses (above MATH120) as well as math-driven Psych, Soc, or Phil courses.
  • Natural Science Group
    • 6 hours required
  • Social Science Group
    • 6 hours required
  • Humanities Group
    • 6 hours required
  • The committee reviews the entire transcript for diversity of coursework – PBK looks for “breadth as shown by the number and variety of courses taken outside the major.” Grades earned in applied and professional work shall not be counted for purposes of eligibility (e.g., business administration, education, engineering, journalism, military science, physical education, applied art and music).
  • The committee review the entire transcript for consistency of performance. If there are many B- or lower grades scattered throughout the transcript, give a low rating.
